I AM the Light of the World

I AM the Light of the World

Light and darkness are “archetypal” i.e., a recurring theme not only in the Bible, but in philosophy, literature and stories throughout history. From Star Wars disturbances in the force from “The Dark Side” to the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, the struggle between light and darkness is well published.

The Scriptures are replete with descriptions and illustrations of the spiritual battle between darkness and light as well! The Gospel of John prologue synthesizes it with inspirational precision, “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome/seized/comprehended it.” – John 1.5

This is, in effect what makes Jesus’ claim so phenomenal. His bold claim, “I AM the light of the world!” (John 8.12 and other places) steps into the front of the line as THE solution to ALL of life’s darkest struggle! Note well: He doesn’t claim to have the light or plans to enlighten. No his statement is larger, grander and well beyond typical narrative or philosophical tenant.

Jesus IS the light of the world. The ONLY light. THE light.

Because this theme can be its own sermon series, I’ll tie it down to one story – the story of Jesus healing a man born blind from John 9. From this event we’ll watch Light go where only darkness was before. We’ll be called and inspired by God’s Word to do what only God can do – eliminate darkness.

See you in worship on Sunday, Good Lord willing,

Karl
