How do YOU know the Voice of God?
How do you discern God’s Voice from the voice in your head?
How has the Lord spoken to you recently? In your lifetime?
These issues and more spring out of Peter’s very brief and very daring proposition to Jesus (out on the water). “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” (Matthew 14.28)
Whether right or wrong, Peter was an “out of the boat” kind of guy. He was bold in faith and in failure, but he was bold. It reminds me of a favorite Martin Luther quote, “Love God and sin boldly.” He wrote this in a letter while hiding for his life. The Reformation had been launched but the institutions of the day were pushing back – hard! Did Luther wonder whether it was God’s Voice – or another – that called him to oppose the church-state of the time, and put his life at risk?
Would God, does God call you to put your life at risk? How do we tell the difference between false prophets and the real deal!?
On Sunday, we’ll integrate three themes together into one message. In the church year calendar, it’s Trinity Sunday on which we honor the mystery of the Trinity. We’ll dust off the Athanasian creed. It’s Father’s Day, so we’ll pay tribute to dad’s and review God as Father, and as “Dad.” Thirdly, we’ll focus on Peter’s words above and seek to find fool proof ways to recognize God’s Calling!
Let’s learn from God’s Word together!
Let’s get out of the boat together!
