If “good works” were evidence, would there be enough evidence to “convict” you of having faith in Jesus!?
The role of good works in the life of a Christian has been the source of both inspiration and schism. Some people are an inspiration from their dedication and perspiration from amazing and tireless good works. Missionaries that have given up their lives or the lives of their families tell inspiring stories that often contrast starkly with our own (lack of real) sacrifice.
We’re saved by Grace alone for sure, but our good works follow right behind us. (Revelation 14.13) They continue to exemplify and demonstrate the spirit of power, love and self-control that creates and sustains the faith in Jesus within. (2 Timothy 1.7) They tell us, in so many words, faith is at work here!
Or not…
What do we do when the light chases away the darkness and illuminates very little? This may be why some prefer the shadows or even the darkness; it keeps a difficult truth hidden (sometimes even from ourselves).
This is where and when the power of the Gospel shines. I find it both comforting and challenging that “even the darkness is as light to you [God]” (Psalm 139.12) In other words, Jesus already sees (in the dark) and knows and invites us to be forgiven. This grace in the darkness-turned-light is both opportunity and inspiration to put our renewed faith back to work!
And at the end of the day, that’s what faith does, it works!
