Transitions are by definition, uh, transitory.
That is they take us from one place we’re accustomed to another place of potential comfort. Physical moves whether permanent or seasonal require the transition from here to there or there to hear (depending on your perspective). 🙂
The trip to the other place calls for planning, and preparation for variables and unknown possibilities. Things like the weather, highway construction or airport TSA lines, not to mention health and relationship separations add emotion to the transition. We persevere through the above because we believe it’s going to be worth it, or we’ll be better for it.
The book of Deuteronomy is about transition with a capital “T.” God’s people are done wondering and wandering and are now ready for the Promised Land. They now know there’s work ahead, but there are no giants in the land. (Read Numbers 13 for the whole story.) They’re ready to believe it’s worth it. They’re ready to trust that the Lord God will be with them here, there and on the journey in-between!
So it was in that ancient time, so it is today. Our lives have become living transitions. Without wandering too far from home, we’re transitioning into a new “world” a new “reality” or what some have dubbed, a new “normal” (which to me is an oxymoron, but I digress).
They and us “moderns” need the same Voice to steady our souls as we cross our own Jordan river. Are you ready for it? Take a deep breath, say a silent prayer of surrender to the Lord’s will and listen. Here’s what God is still speaking today from Deuteronomy 31.6…
“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread… for the Lord God goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you!”
Remember who you are and to Whom you belong,
Karl
