Do you remember?
Memorial Day was first celebrated after ~620,000 lives were lost on both sides of the American Civil War. The war ended in 1865, about 148 years ago.
Remembering to bless the Lord for all his benefits (Psalm 103) was written about 1000 years before the birth of Jesus, so, about 3000 years ago.
Jesus’ Upper Room transformation of the Passover into the Lord’s Supper was centered on Jesus’ imperative, “Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22.19)
The point?
Whether it is reflective of our nation or the Kingdom of God – remembering is a powerful thing that recalls the past in order to bless and inform the present! Perhaps the most famous secular quote is from George Santayana, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
Franklin D. Roosevelt likewise “Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.”
Before our nation was a nation, God told the Nation of Israel, “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” – Deut 4.9
And so, our Memorial Day weekend worship will begin with honoring the sacrifice of fallen US soldiers. Our affiliated Boy Scout troop will post colors, lead us in the pledges and usher during our worship.
Then, we’ll transition to the larger, universal and eternal Kingdom of God and remember those who have died for their faith because they’ve profoundly believed, their Lord and God died for them!
Together, we will…remember!
