What happens when light encounters darkness?
Part 1: Darkness Dissipates
Where does the darkness go when you turn on the light?
Darkness has no properties; no mass; no substance. It only exists in the absence of light, and, as such, cannot influence the light.
These thoughts may sound like the rudiments of a physics class discussion, but it will actually be a part of the sacred conversation we call worship beginning this Sunday.
Darkness vs Light is an ancient Biblical concept of dualism that has been circulated in cultures around the globe. Today it’s alive and making millions in games and films of Star Wars fame. There is something that resonates in us all when we engage the discussion of light vs darkness…
This universal understanding may be why John begins his gospel with this famous verse, “The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” (1.5) He is preparing us to understand the nature of both the role Jesus plays and the continuing dual underway.
The heart of the Gospel is to provide assurance. Light wins. Darkness dissipates. This includes all the darkness against which you and I struggle. Light wins. Darkness dissipates. Whether it be depression or addiction; apathy or selfishness. Light wins. Darkness dissipates.
The enemies who are darkness have no properties, no mass, no substance when confronted by God’s Light. They do more than flee – they dissipate!
Come to worship because you belong to the Light!
I look forward to seeing you in worship,
Pastor Karl
